Fringe Salon Spa ~ Black History Month

Located on the west side of Madison, WI, Fringe Salon Spa is an amazing Black-owned business. In February 2021, Fringe is celebrating 11 years serving the Madison area.  Fringe has a family atmosphere for styling hair, skin, and doing nails, but what really shines is the very bubbly and outgoing owner, Lead Stylist, Tamara, also known as T!

Fringe is very conscious to work with local vendors in Madison to stock products in store. At the time of this interview, all vendors with products sold at Fringe are from local Black-owned businesses. Open Monday – Friday (and even a few late nights), find Fringe Salon Spa in the Gammon Place Shopping Center off the Beltline at Gammon Rd.

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, Madam C.J. Walker is the first black woman self-made millionaire in America. Born December of 1867 in Louisiana to former slaves, she was orphaned at the age of seven and had only three months of formal education.

Madam C.J. Walker was a talented entrepreneur who started her own company called Madam C.J. Walker Manufacturing Company, in Indiana. She developed and marketed a line of hair care products for black women.  Her success made her very influential and she became an icon for the black community.  Madam C.J. Walker had the opportunity to travel the world and she became known for her activism and philanthropy. The final chapters of her life were spent in upstate New York, where her home became a social gathering place for the black community until her passing in May of 1919.

Over the month of February, DJ Fusion will connect with unique, local, Black-owned businesses, each of whom will share a piece of Black history that is personal to them or something that may not have been taught, traditionally, in schools.
