Theater Meets Climate Justice in CTM’s Bold New Production

What happens when the youth are given the power to judge the past? That question takes center stage in The Trials, the latest bold production from Children’s Theater of Madison (CTM), running May 2 through May 11 at the Starlight Theater at MYArts.

Written by acclaimed UK playwright Dawn King, The Trials is a tense and timely drama set in a not-so-distant future where the climate crisis has reached its breaking point. Adults are on trial for their roles in environmental destruction, and the jury is made up entirely of young people. It’s a dystopian courtroom drama that dares to ask: how do we hold those responsible for a broken world accountable?

A Madison Twist on a Global Story

In a unique twist, CTM’s production has been localized to reflect Madison’s own identity, with permission from the playwright. The cast features 12 dynamic youth actors from the community, bringing urgency and authenticity to a story that mirrors real-world concerns about climate, justice, and generational responsibility.

Directed by Marcella Kearns of Forward Theater Company, this show balances tension and humor in a powerful way, driving home the emotional weight of its themes without losing its accessibility.
