Wisconsin Hip Hop Exhibit Set to Open May 30

A Monumental Moment for Madtown Culture

The beat of Wisconsin hip hop is about to echo through the halls of history. On May 30 from 4–6 PM, Pyramidal Productions, led by longtime community creatives Ginx and Menku, will officially unveil the first phase of the Wisconsin Hip Hop Exhibit in partnership with the Wisconsin Historical Society (WHS). Located at One South Pinckney Street in the iconic glass building across from the Capitol, this free public celebration is a major cultural milestone for Madison and the state at large.

A Legacy in the Making

Ginx and Menku have been building this vision for years, filming interviews, collecting rare artifacts, and stitching together the rich, often overlooked story of Wisconsin’s role in hip hop. From pioneering DJs and early radio trailblazers to national stars like Rico Love and Speech of Arrested Development, the exhibit shines a spotlight on the 608’s powerful but underappreciated influence in shaping the genre.

The opening event will include live entertainment, food, and the debut of the museum’s first installment, a preview of what’s to come in a larger, permanent exhibit planned for the WHS’s upcoming new facility.

More Than an Exhibit—A Movement

Pyramidal Productions isn’t stopping at museum walls. The launch includes a multi-phase rollout:

  • A docuseries chronicling the rise of hip hop in Madison, Milwaukee, and statewide.
  • An after-school program promoting self-esteem, cultural pride, and creative expression among youth.
  • Community art installations, including a 3D lenticular piece titled “Madtown Marauders,” inspired by A Tribe Called Quest’s iconic Midnight Marauders album.

“This is about giving flowers to the pioneers while they can still smell them,” says Jinx. “If you’re an artist, a producer, a videographer, whatever your craft, we see you, and we appreciate your contribution to our culture.”

Plan Your Visit

The Wisconsin Hip Hop Exhibit will remain on display all summer, offering locals and visitors alike a chance to engage with the state’s hip hop heritage. Once students return in the fall, the exhibit will expand into WHS’s library space, leading up to its final home in WHS’s highly anticipated new campus.

If you’re ready to witness history in the making, and celebrate 50 more years (and counting) of hip hop, don’t miss this event.
