Lil Wayne’s ‘Tha Carter VI’ Debuts at #2—Lowest First-Week Sales of His Career
Lil Wayne’s long-awaited Tha Carter VI debuted at number two on the Billboard 200, with 108,000 equivalent album units sold. While it’s a respectable number, it marks the lowest debut in not only the entire Tha Carter series, but in Wayne’s entire 30-year career. In contrast, his 2018 album Tha Carter V opened with 480,000 units, and 2020’s Funeraldid 139,000.
Critics have been mixed, and online hate has been loud—but that didn’t stop Wayne from taking big swings. The 19-track project includes bold features like U2’s Bono, who appears on “The Days,” as well as 2 Chainz, Big Sean, Kodak Black, Jelly Roll, Andrea Bocelli, and Wyclef Jean. Wayne addresses aging, legacy, and evolution on the record—trying to balance mainstream expectations with personal experimentation.
Despite not taking the top spot, Wayne’s still got fans like Justin Bieber backing him. The pop star recently FaceTimed Weezy and called him the GOAT on Instagram. Tha Carter VI might not be the chart-topper some expected—but the icon’s still creating moments.
