Akon City Dream Crumbles: Senegal’s $6 Billion Smart City Shelved After Years of Delays

Akon’s grand vision for a futuristic city in Senegal has officially been shelved. Once hailed as a real-world Wakanda, Akon City was supposed to transform the 800-hectare Mbodiène coastal site into a $6 billion renewable-energy powered metropolis. But after five years of delays and broken promises, officials have confirmed that the original project “no longer exists.”

Led by the Grammy-nominated singer-turned-entrepreneur Akon, the project gained global attention for its bold design, featuring a bendy skyscraper, sustainable infrastructure, and smart-city technology. Phase one promised a shopping mall, hospital, school, police station, and solar plant—all to be completed by the end of 2023.

Fast forward to 2025, and the site remains mostly barren. Locals who were promised jobs and growth are disillusioned. “Nothing has changed,” one resident told the BBC. The only visible progress? An unfinished reception building.

Officials now say they’re working with Akon on a “more realistic” version of the project. But with no new budget or timeline in sight, many are left wondering if the dream is dead—or just on hold.
