Hip Hop History Spotlight: 27 Years Since Trick Daddy’s www.thug.com
On September 22, 1998, Trick Daddy dropped his sophomore album www.thug.com, and with it, Miami rap made its permanent mark on the national stage. Following his debut Based on a True Story, Trick Daddy doubled down on his raw storytelling and authentic Miami perspective. The album’s futuristic title was a nod to the internet era, making Trick one of the first rappers to embrace digital branding before it was a trend.
The project’s breakout hit, “Nann N***a,” introduced the world to Trina, who stole the spotlight with her fiery debut and went on to become the “Baddest Chick” in hip hop. Beyond the hit single, the album carried weight with tracks like “Hold On” and “Going With Your Move,” which captured the harsh realities of street life with an unfiltered edge. The album climbed to No. 30 on the Billboard 200, reached No. 8 on the Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums chart, and was certified gold by the RIAA. More than numbers, though, www.thug.com established Slip-N-Slide Records as a powerhouse and paved the way for Miami’s lasting influence on hip hop.
Nearly three decades later, www.thug.com still resonates as a landmark in Southern rap history, a project that was raw, ahead of its time, and essential in shaping the Miami sound we know today.
