Kwik Trip Ends Pennies: New Cash Rounding Policy Begins as Treasury Halts Penny Production
Kwik Trip is making a big change that signals the end of an era for pocket change. Following the U.S. Treasury’s decision to stop minting pennies, the La Crosse-based convenience store chain has introduced a “cash rounding” policy. All cash purchases will now round down to the nearest five cents, while card transactions remain exact.
John McHugh, Kwik Trip’s vice president of external relations, explained that the dwindling penny supply left the company no choice. “We still have 17% of our customers paying with cash,” McHugh said. “Given that, we have to make a pivot.”
Kwik Trip anticipates other retailers will follow suit as penny circulation drops nationwide. While many customers see this as a welcome simplification, others question if this marks the end of an iconic American coin.
So what’s your take—time to move on or time to save the penny?
