Hitterz Collective: How Papa Kobina Is Using Dance To Build Community and Culture in Madison
Madison’s got rhythm and few embody that energy like Papa Kobina, founder of The Hitterz Collective. What started as a high school dance crew back in 2008 has grown into a full street dance arts management company that connects creativity, culture, and community across the 608.
Papa’s journey began when he moved to Madison from Ghana and discovered dance as his voice. From performing at venues like Overture Center, High Noon, and The Orpheum, to teaching youth in local schools, The Hitterz Collective has become a home for movement, mentorship, and empowerment. Their mission is to educate and inspire through Black vernacular dance styles including hip hop, house, popping, krump, and more while creating paid opportunities for dancers, musicians, and visual artists.
Now based at Copa Madison in Fitchburg, The Hitterz Collective offers classes for ages 7 and up, helping participants unlock their superpowers through movement. Sessions run Monday through Friday and cover hip hop, jazz, contemporary, and Pilates, blending fitness, flow, and self-expression.
For Papa Kobina, being a Black business owner is about more than making moves—it’s about making space for others to rise. “If I can start a business that inspires someone else to build their own, that’s what it’s all about,” he says.

Madison, this is more than dance. It’s movement with purpose.
