For twenty years Savory Sunday has quietly done what many talk about and few commit to long term. Every single Sunday rain snow or sunshine volunteers gather at the Capitol and serve free meals to people who need them most. Not once in a while. Not during holidays only. Every week. On February 7th Savory Sunday brings the city together for Grilling for Peace at Lake Wingra. The visual alone tells the story. Seventy Weber grills arranged into a massive peace sign right on the ice. It is bold it is joyful and it turns attention into action. This event is not just about grilling food. It is about sustaining a mission that feeds people week after week throughout the year.

Grilling for Peace helps raise the funds and supplies needed to cover nearly fifty free meals annually. Each meal costs roughly one hundred dollars and serves fifty or more people. When winter temperatures drop and resources stretch thin that support becomes critical. Donations from this one day help ensure that no Sunday gets skipped.

The event also highlights how community support looks in real time. Local churches youth groups neighbors and businesses contribute food baked goods warm clothing and time. A simple donation can turn into hot meals winter socks or hand warmers in the hands of someone who needs them that same week.
