Bikes for Kids-The Big Breakdown, Dane Co.’s largest hands on recycling event

Bikes for Kids Wisconsin will host Dane County’s largest hands-on recycling event, the Big Breakdown at 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 27th at the bike center, located at 354 Coyier Lane, Madison, WI 53713. 40 volunteers are needed to roll up their sleeves and pitch in to help tear bikes apart. This event will be held rain or shine and is sponsored by Risk Alternatives.
Through its circular economy business model, Bikes for Kids Wisconsin kept over 97,000 pounds of materials out of the landfill by reusing, recycling, and restoring bikes that have been donated by the public. Since 2017, 14,135 bikes have been distributed to people of all ages facing financial instability. The organization recognizes bicycles as essential tools for economic empowerment and transportation—not just recreation. Bikes are distributed annually through a robust network of Bike Distribution Partners comprised of other 501c3 nonprofits, public schools, tribes, and municipalities. Bikes are distributed through the Bike Giveaway Program and the Bike to Work Program. Bikes may be donated year-round with the most desirable donations being gently used bikes.
