🎯 The Meaning & Significance of Hmong New Year

Hmong New Year, known in Hmong as Noj Peb Caug Xyoo Tshiab, celebrates the end of the harvest and welcomes blessings, prosperity, and community renewal.

Historically, this was a time for families to come together, eat, give thanks, and honor ancestors. Today, the tradition continues—with adaptations—to connect younger generations, preserve heritage, and build unity within the diaspora.

At the Madison event, attendees will have the chance to engage in:

  • Cultural Performances — Traditional dances, music, and Hmong poetry

  • Competitions & Talent — Singing contests, dance battles, talent showcases

  • Games & Ball Tossing — Youth and elders join in classic games like pov pob (ball toss)

  • Food & Vendors — Authentic Hmong cuisine, handmade crafts, cultural goods

  • Community & Connection — A gathering point for families, friends, and neighbors

🌟 Why This Celebration Matters (Especially in Wisconsin)

  • Cultural preservation & identity
With over 70,000 Hmong residents in Wisconsin (in 2023), events like this help preserve language, customs, and traditions for younger generations.

  • Community connection
Bringing together Hmong families, allies, and neighbors fosters understanding, solidarity, and mutual respect.

  • Visibility & education
For non-Hmong residents, this festival offers a window into Hmong art, history, beliefs, and ways of life.

  • Economic & local growth
Food vendors, artisans, and local businesses benefit from the increased foot traffic and publicity.
