Madison Housing Week

October 19th-25th is this year’s Madison Housing Week, which will offer a series of events and gatherings for all Madisonians to learn and advocate for solutions as the city continues to grow. An official schedule is available at madisonhousingweek.com.
The Madison Housing Coalition supports building more housing of all types throughout the city, especially “missing middle” and infill housing where strong infrastructure and transit already exist. The coalition calls for more variety in housing options, so that everyone is free to choose a home that fits their needs—without needing to leave their neighborhood. It also aims to promote affordable housing, creating pathways to home ownership, and ensuring that all Madisonians have a safe, healthy place to live.
Statewide, coalition partner AARP Wisconsin supports zoning changes and ordinances that allow for more affordable housing options for all age groups and income levels. This includes the ability for folks to build Accessory Dwelling Units (or “granny flats”) on their property; those are separate structures in which aging loved-ones can live instead of being pushed into assisted-living facilities or nursing homes.
AARP Wisconsin is also working specifically with leaders in such cities as La Crosse and Milwaukee to encourage them to create more housing options for all of their residents.
